The story revolves around the main character Akhilandeshwari, who is 45 years old women in as search of independence. Belonging to a Tamil conservative family she works as an income-tax clerk. Half of her life is spent entertaining and looking after her daughter, the sister and the aunt. In order to break free she sets on a one way train journey to Kanyakumari all alone for the first time in her life. On the way she gets in touch with five other women who are travelling with her as train companion. The rest of the Novel dwells around Akhila’s experience with the Ladies Coupe.
The Great Indian Novel- Shashi Tharoor
The particular book has received award for narrating two-thousand-year-old epic, The Mahabharata and matching it with the events and characters from twentieth-century of Indian politics. Shashi Tharoor’s novel records the history of struggle for Indian freedom and independence. The target readers of this Novel are those who know nothing about India. The entire novel is hilarious and at the same time moving.
Untouchable- Anand Mulkh Raj
As the name depicts, the ‘Untouchable` is a story of, ‘Bakha’ who belongs to low cast group. The novel narrates the sufferings and shame he has to come across during his life time for being low cast. Bakha although works as a sweeper but he thinks him to be a superior as compared to his fellow-outcastes. The story is inspired by the author`s childhood occurrence when once he was injured and carried home by a low-caste sweeper boy. In spite of being grateful to the boy , Anand’s mother gave spanking to him for touching his son.

Written by well acclaimed Indian author, Amitav Ghosh the book sets in the back drop of Calcutta. It is a medical thriller that recounts the drama and adventure faced by people who are brought together by mysterious turn of events. The book is said to be based on the life of Sir Ronald Ross, the Nobel Prize winning scientist.
A girl like me- Swati Kaushal
It is a story of a young girl, Anisha Rai or Ani who experience a big transformation in her life. Born and raised in Minnesota- America, after the death of her father her mother decides to move back to India. Anisha, after reaching India experiences culture shocks and teenage problems. Anisha also feels ignored by her mom busy schedule and as a result she turns stubborn. But as the story proceeds she understands her mom situation and recognizes the sacrifice her mother has to make to fulfill her daughter’s wishes.
The Inheritance of Loss- Kiran Desai
The Inheritance of Loss, written by Kiran Desai was first published in 2006. It took almost seven years for writer to complete the book. It received couple of awards for being best seller. The main story revolves around two main protagonists, Biju and Sai. Biju is an illegal Indian immigrant living in the United States where as Sai is a girl living in Darjeeling. The novel also talks about the religious conflict in India between Muslim and Buddhist. The major theme running throughout is the loss of identity and the characters in the novel exhibit annoyance at the English Indians who have lost their traditions.
